Inter County Terriers Team (U120) 2011/12

Team Captain: Denis Nesbitt.

National Quarter-finals

Terriers 4½ - 7½ Essex
Match played 19 May 2012 at Bloxwich Junior Chess Club, Bloxwich.

Just to report that the terriers came second against a much stronger Essex team, the final score being 4½ 7½.  The terriers relative weakness on the bottom boards finally told as the match was even on the top 5 or so boards, but the strength Essex had on the bottom boards was the telling factor in the end.  The Terriers could only muster one win over the twelve boards, with many close fought draws against higher graded opponents that had to be earned in the end.

Now our county season has drawn to a close, Id like to thank all those people who turned out and supported both myself and the Terriers team, we played 6 matches, or 72 boards with no defaults.  Everyone did their part and contributed to the success we had this year - The most successful Staffordshire U120 team for a while, next year we will be defending our Title of MCCU U120 County Champions.

We wish Essex well for the next round as they go on to visit Warwickshire in the semi-final.

It just remains for me to thank Ray and Eunice Dolan, who stepped in at the 11th hour to offer the Bloxwich Junior Chess Club and there facilities to the south of the county for the match, the venue was all set out and the coffee, tea and biscuits flowed generously.

Heres to next year.
Dennis

MCCU Inter-Counties Under-120 Championship

Terriers 8 - 4 Lincolnshire
Match played 24 March 2012 Webheath Village Hall, Webheath.

I just thought Id just let you know that the Staffordshire Terriers beat Worcs U120 on Saturday 7½ 4½.  We are now awaiting confirmation from the league that we progress to the quarter finals as the MCCU U120 champions!.

My thanks go out to the team who played out of their skins on the day, not to be outdone by the closure of the M5 due to a serious accident earlier that morning that resulted in the match being delayed by half an hour, the emphatic win was even more remarkable as going by the latest January grades Worcs out graded the terriers on 10 of the 12 boards.

Regards,
Dennis

Warwickshire 7½ - 4½ Terriers
Match played 7 January 2012 Moseley All Services club, Birmingham.

First report by Denis Nesbitt (Capt)
Not a good start to 2012, but nevertheless special mention should be given to Karthik Selvan who was last to finish and won against his more experienced higher rated opponent.  Also to David Barker who, likewise, won in his first ever match representing the terriers.

Ive also added below a summary very kindly provided by Abby Sergeant, who attended as a reserve and cheerleader, so my gratitude extends to Abby and the rest of the team who gave up another Saturday afternoon in the name of Staffordshire chess.

Cheers
Denis

Report by Abby Sargeant (Club Sec for Meir)
The first match of 2012 with the Terriers was going to be a late start.  However, by 1.50pm and a full team for Staffordshire it looked like another promising win.  Into the first 20 minutes of play we had our first loss, followed by an unfortunate drastic game on the table behind.  The next hour proved interesting as I watched Fenton, Cheddleton, Newcastle and Cannock battle it out and take draws, wins and three losses against Warwickshire.  With the final two boards reaching a time of 4.45pm it was suitably a quick finish for both teams.

With tea, coffee and biscuits on offer in the next room, I could see most players needed revival whilst analysing their games.  Thanks to Pauline Woodward Warwickshire captain.

Bye for now
Abby Sergeant

Terriers 6½ - 5½ Bulldogs
Match played 12 November 2012 at Newcastle Bridge Club.

It was a close fought encounter with no quarter given between the two canine factions a typical dog fight ensued.  In the end it was a tail of two halves, on one paw the terriers certainly had their claws out as the top boards were taken 4½ 1½, but in typical dogged fashion the Bulldogs retaliated and took the bottom boards 4 2.  In the end the terriers sent the bulldogs home with their tails between their legs as the final score being 6½ 5½ to the terriers to record their first victory over the bulldogs for some time.

I cant think of any more doggie jokes for my report, so Ill sign off and go chew a bone.
