MCCU Inter-Counties Under-140 Championship

Staffordshire 8½ - 7½ Warwickshire
Match played 21 March 2011 in Bloxwich

Match report by Matthew Carr
The battle between Staffordshire and Warwickshire would take place in a church, in the town of Bloxwich under the leadership of Mr Ray Dolan recently appointed captain of the U140 team.  The match started at 1.30pm and Staffordshire won the toss having white on the odd boards. God was certainly shining down on us, the sun was right in my eyes the whole time I was playing.

The openings were good, Ray Dolan opened up with the English, Peter Broomhall responded well to the centre counter, John Montague fought off a Roy Lopez, Nick Crutchley used his much loved Reti opening and I went into a closed Sicilian.

One hour into our battle and two results had already come in.  Nigel Parker had managed a draw but our board 13 Peter Evans had lost.  Warwickshire were up and were smiles all round our when Peter Shaw lost and Alan Dobson drew.

It was time to wipe those smiles off. Peter Broomhall started our comeback when his opponent sacked a rook to win Peters queen.  It worked out a few moves later the sacrifice had failed and his opponent resigned.  Andrew Leadbetter won on board five and from rumours it was in style with an amazing attack, well done Andrew.  We were even, then it was my turn to give in a result. I won. We finally had the lead.

It didn’t last.  Unfortunately John Montague lost his game making us even again.  By this point there was only four boards still playing and Warwickshire looking like they would either draw or win.  There smiles were back, what would happen next?

Our answer came a few minutes later when Steve Emmerton and Mike Page took draws.  Then we turned to Nick Crutchley and Ray.  Ray was winning by a Bishop but couldn’t get his knight or king in to support the attack and there were opposite coloured bishops on.  Draw was on all our minds. Then I noticed a lot of gatherers around Nick’s board.  With good reason.  The enemy king was deep in Nicks territory and an enemy queen causing problems. The game could be won or lost here.

Then came laughter from board 1.  Ray's opponent had run out of time and Ray had finally got through the barriers.  We were one up, we only needed a draw.

We got it.  Nick's opponent had forced an exchange of queens and had a lone King vs.  Nick's King and Bishop.

The final score was 8½ -7½ in favour of Staffordshire.  We got them.

Well done and thanks to all that played, and well done and thanks to our glorious leader for his hard work.  Well done Ray.

TOTALS

Derbyshire 10 - 6 Staffordshire
Match played 5 February 2011 in Spondon, Derbyshire
This match was postponed from 4 December because of bad weather.

I don't have full details yet, but the Staffordshire team were beaten 10 - 6 by Derbyshire yesterday.  The team were two players short at the start of the match due to problems raising a team, but a third player failed to arrive in Spondon for the match, forcing the team to default 3 boards.

Yesterday was also John's last match as U140 captain.  He is stepping down due to ill health.  John became captain of the U140 team for the 2008/9 season.  Under his captaincy, the team reached the national quarter-finals in spring 2010, where a team from Suffolk beat them by one point 8½ - 7½.

Just a week ago, the Staffordshire U140 team drew with championship leaders Worcestershire, putting them equal second on points in the Midland counties championships, but with a game in hand.

Well done John.
