Inter County Bulldogs Team (U120) 2010/11

Team Captain: Peter Evans

MCCU Inter-Counties Under-120 Championship

Lancashire 7½ - 2½ Bulldogs
Match played 28 May 2011 in Culceth.

Report by Peter Evans

Quarter Final Blues
On Saturday 28th May the county chess season ended for Staffordshire Bulldogs.

We had enough problems before we even got started.  The ECF controller was on holiday.  It took a bit of detective work from the captain’s supportive wife to find the opponents.  We could not agree a date; we agreed a date; it was the semi final date and we had to get a new date.  The venue had to be changed and the sets were nearly forgotten.

The 28th dawned, captain Peter Evans left work, ate breakfast, picked up Geoff Cox and headed north to Culceth, near Warrington.  Lancashire were our opponents in the Quarter final.

At the venue we got a phone message, four of the team were stuck on the M6 behind an accident.  1pm, start, only two here, then 2 cars arrive at once, only four stuck on the M6.

We had to start the match, four were still on the M6, but Lancashire agreed their lateness was unavoidable so they would play a shorter time in four of the games.

We started and David Molineux, Simon Jones, David Buckley and Bob Brodie arrived and at last it was ten versus ten.

The first results came through.  All the excitement had been too much for Peter, he took the wrong piece and his opponents attack developed faster than Peter could defend it.  Never mind we stuck back Andrew and Tony drew and David Buckley despite his late start won to level the scores. Then Bob Brodie got a draw.

The match rapidly slipped away, David Molineux had not got over the journey and he blundered.  Geoff made a major mistake, he had Queen versus Knight and Rook. “Don’t put your Queen there.” He thought.  “Why did I put my Queen there he said. Another win to Lancs, but it was one of the longer Rook and King mates you will ever see.

Paul Guest was a lot of pawns down and his match ended when he ran out of safe squares for his Queen.  Danny fought hard and had more material but he lost on time.

Simon was last to finish, there might have been a clever draw on this board, but it was not found and the day ended with a 7½ - 2½ win to our hosts.

My thanks to thank everyone for their efforts throughout the county season and let’s hope for better luck next year.

Bulldogs Season Report
By Peter Evans

Peter Evans from Stafford Chess Club took over the captaincy of Staffordshire Bulldogs (U120) at the start of the 2010-11 season.

The Bulldogs came second in the Midlands U120 competition with 3 wins, one draw and a loss.  The lost qualifying game was to Worcestershire the eventual winners.

The Bulldogs then played Lancashire in the national quarter finals.  This match was lost by the heavy margin of 7½ to 2½

Despite the lost quarter final it was felt that the season was successful and we hope to improve next season.

Twenty players played for the team during the season and they came from most of the eligible clubs in the south of the county.  I would like to thank everyone who played and was presently surprised to find people volunteering to play.

Despite having a pool of twenty players it was unfortunate that we did default a board in each of our away matches.

Special thanks go to David Buckley the outgoing skipper for his advice all and to Bushbury secretary Phil Staley for all his efforts in arranging the room and setting up the home matches.

Warwickshire 5 - 6 Bulldogs
Match played 19 February 2011 at Warley Quinborne Chess Club, Birmingham.

Match report by Peter Evans
There was some confusion at the start of this game. Staffordshire Bulldogs were one player short.  Warwickshire were expecting a full team, but due to pick up issues three players were late. The match got under way with Andrew and Danny waiting for opponents and Paul Guest playing Warwickshire’s designated Board 12.  The Bulldogs were out-graded on all boards.

The early results went to the Bulldogs, Mike Savin gained a quick draw, and Geoff took advantage of the Warwickshire skipper’s confusion with a win.  Andrew and Danny duly won on time and Peter came from two pawns down to win with a queen, rook and knight combination. Further analysis is needed here, to see if he was lucky or not.

Warwickshire then began to fight back; Charlie Brown on board 4 lost his queen and although he fought on defeat was inevitable. David and Chris lost on Boards 10 and 11 and the match was in the balance.  Three boards to play and all results were possible.

Paul Guest increased the Bulldogs lead with a well deserved win.  He is unbeaten in the county season with 3 wins and a draw.  Barry Lewis played a steady and competent defensive game on Board 1 and his opponent was forced to concede the draw giving the Bulldogs 6 points.

On Board 2, Paul Walters was fighting hard, but he was unable to counter a considerable material deficit and was forced to resign.

This gave a match score 6-5 to the Bulldogs and we thank Warwickshire for their hospitality.
