Staffordshire 10½ - 5½ Derbyshire
Match played 14 November 2009 in Bushbury, Wolverhampton.
Match report by Matthew Carr
2pm was the start time and when it came all players were present and correct and the battles began.
Matthew Wyza faced the Roy Lopez; Sam Onions had the centre counter used on him; Conrad Green faced battled against the Vienna; John Day fought the sicilian defence and I got a four knights defence.
Our fastest game today was from Alan Dobson, closely followed by John Day.
Both games were draws.
Well done to both of you.
Conrad Green finished his game with a win, which put us in the lead.
Congratulations Conrad on a job well done.
Sam Onions and Brian Burchall were the next to finish with wins for Staffordshire well done.
My game ended in a draw and with an unfortunate loss from David Hadley we were 4½ –2½ ahead.
Four more points would secure a win, who would deliver them?
Tony Meakin helped start that answer.
Tony, along with John Montague, Paul Walters and Matthew Wyza acquired draws — well done everyone.
John Button worked his magic for us again and secured a win on board two.
Now we only needed one more point to win.
My attention was drawn to board 15.
There was a queen race going on between Elliot Green&rsquots pawn on the ‘a’ file and Norman Parkin’s pawn on the ‘h’.
Elliot calculated he would have a queen two moves ahead of his opponent.
When Elliot’s queen materialised on the board we had our point.
Staffordshire stood on 8½ – 4½ we’d won.
Dennis Nesbitt added to our score with a win of his own, well done Dennis.
After that, the only games still playing were Mike Page and Ray Dolan.
Mike locked the position up and the game was called a draw.
Ray Dolan had been facing extreme threats of queening for well over an hour: In the end he stopped the threat and before any more problems came, a draw was agreed.
Well done Ray.
Our final score was 10½ – 5½.
It was a very exciting afternoon all round.
I would like to thank John Day for organising the venue and for doing the catering for us.
Good luck to the U140 team in there next battle in December.
Matthew Carr.

Warwickshire 4 – 12 Staffordshire
Match played 31 October 2009.
Match report by Matthew Carr.
The battle started at 1.30 and all the players from both teams had arrived — except my opponent.
The openings went well for all of us, John Button opened with the Reti, Matthew Wyza with the anti-sicilian, John Monague had the Vienna Gambit thrown at him, Dennis Nesbitt fired off with the Roy Lopez and Ray Dolan started with the english.
10 minutes later, my opponent turned up.
After about twenty minutes of battle and six moves played John Button’s opponent resigned.
An hour passed like lightning and the tensions were starting to show on all of us.
Warwickshire broke first with a win for Staffordshire on board 14, well done to Elliot, his first time for the U140’s this season, well done to him.
Two hours into battle I went to look over at the score sheet at found myself mouth wide open - We were winning 5 – 0.
A little later more results started to trickle in and we were standing on 8 – 2 and a draw from one of our players meant we were on 8½ and couldnt lose.
Finally, the score stood 11 – 4 with just Conrad Green to finish.
Conrad was a Bishop down but he had six pawns to his opponents three.
Three of Conrad’s pawns were passed, connected and one was standing on c7.
A few moves later it was all over.
Conrad pushed his rook down to d8 and his opponent resigned.
Well done Conrad.
In total we finished 12 – 4 and a good win for Staffordshire.
Well done to all who played today, and well done to John Day for great captaining.
I look forward to reporting on our next match.
Until next time,
Matthew Carr

Match report by Matthew Carr.
When it came time to start play Lincolnshire were a man down and we were two men short on the team, so they had a point advantage over staffordshire from the word go.
Then an hour into play the results started to trickle in.
Peter Shaw won on board 12 and Matthew Carr secured a win on board three.
Our captain, John Day, followed with a draw.
Matthew Wyza was a knight down heading into the end game but unfortunately couldn’t pull it back.
Dennis Nesbitt’s opponent blundered away a knight and resigned a move later.
John Montague’s opponent found himself in a position where it he either lost the game or gave up a rook.
Three hours in, Staffs had an 8 – 7 lead with just Paul Clapham, Roger Edwards and Karol Grzybowski still playing.
Staffordshire needed only a draw from one of them to secure the win.
That draw came from Paul Clapham, followed closely by Roger Edwards who also achieved a draw, unfortunatly for Karol his opponent queened a pawn and ten moves later Karol resigned.
The final result was 7 – 9 in favour of Staffordshire.
Well done to everyone who played today.
It was a most exciting day.
The next match is at the end of the month.
Lets look forward to repeating the success.
