Inter County Bulldogs Team (U100 A) 2007/8

Team Captain: David Buckley

MCCU Inter-Counties Under-100 Semi-final 2007 - 8

In the MCCU west zone, the Bulldogs finished second (behind their Terriers rivals), but were beaten by their Warwickshire opponents in the regional semi-final.

Warwickshire 7 - 5 Bulldogs
Match played 8 March 2008 at Warley Quinborne Chess Club, Birmingham.

As losing semi-finalists, they could still qualify for the national stages.  By mutual consent, both captains agreed that rather than having a play-off, match points and game points would decide who would compete in the national stage.  Match points were level 6 - 6, so by 31½ game points to 26 in the regular season (37½ - 31 with the semi-finals), the Terriers went through to the national stages as the third midlands team.

A team of Shropshire's junior players played host to our Bulldogs team (Staffordshire A) for the Inter-County fixture.  Team captain David Buckley told me that despite the result, Shropshire's players were very strong.

Congratulations to our team, and well done to our Shropshire opponents.

This afternoon's U100 Inter-County fixture saw David Buckley's A team (the Bulldogs) play host to Traci Whitfield's B team (the Terriers) at Brewood.

On paper, the grades of both teams were similar, but as the result shows, the Terriers ended with a decisive win.  The score quickly went to 6 - 1, but it was almost an hour later, before David Buckley's own drawn game secured his team's fate.

Because of last minute problems raising a team, the Terriers included players from as far apart as Kidsgrove and Walsall Kipping.  Despite the results, everyone taking part seemed to have a good time.
Well done everyone!
