Team Captain: Geoff Rosser.

MCCU Inter-Counties Under-125 Championship

Middlesex 10½ - 5½ Staffordshire
Match played 20 May 2006

Report by Geoff Rosser (Capt)
Here is an update on the Under 125 season.

Our season came to a halt yesterday (20 May) when we faced a very strong Middlesex team in the quarter-final and were decisively beaten. There were some valiant efforts despite the whole team being noticeably outgraded, notably from the Rushall contingent: Stephen Harris drew on Board 1, Peter Leary won on Board 3 and Shane Cooksey won on Board 12.

In fact Pete Broomhall now plays for Rushall and he drew his game, which means that Rushall players scored over half of the Staffs points (3 out of 5½) and didn't lose a game!

Nottinghamshire 9 - 7 Staffordshire
Match played 28 January 2006

Report by Geoff Rosser (Capt)
In the under 125 Midlands semi-final Staffs were disappointingly beaten by a Notts team including several promising youngsters, with an unusual 3 losses on the top 4 boards.  We had to default one board since Richard Wilkinson unfortunately locked both sets of keys inside his car and didn't make it. This means that the Midlands final will be between Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire A.

However, since the MCCU is entitled to 3 places in the national knockout rounds we shall go forward, probably playing a preliminary match on 22nd April before the national quarter-finals.

Warwickshire 9 - 7 Staffordshire
Match played 3 December 2005

Report by Geoff Rosser (Capt)
It was a hard-fought match, as usual against our old adversaries, which was not decided until the last 2 games. The number of draws rivalled Wolves F C's League record in the last two seasons - 10 out of the 16 games played, though this reflected a generally solid performance and closely contested games. Our only two winners were both from Wolverhampton - Pete Broomhall and Kelvin Jones. However unexpected losses by two other Wolverhampton players meant that we only finish second in the West Zone and will play Notts A in the Midlands semi-final on 29th January.

I am still interested in hearing from anyone with a grade between 100 and 124 who is keen to volunteer for this team, . You are eligible if you live or have lived in Staffordshire, or play for a club or in a league registered in the county. I am sure other county captains are also pleased to learn of players willing to play for the county on a Saturday afternoon.

Staffordshire 10½ - 5½ Worcestershire
Match played 29 October 2005

Report by Geoff Rosser (Capt)
A very solid performance by our Under 125 team against Worcestershire, with 8 wins and only 3 losses amongst our players. We look forward with confidence to the showdown with Warwickshire on 3rd December. Admittedly we had a slight grading advantage, but 8.5-2.5 over the top 11 boards was quite impressive!

You may notice that 13 of our team hail from the south of the county and only 3 from the north, and I am waiting for more north Staffs players to come forward, as did Andrew Stott (Fenton) recently, who impressed with a very cool performance on his first appearance.

Match played 1 October 2005

Report by Geoff Rosser (Capt)
The under 125 Staffs v Shropshire match was played on 1st October (rearranged date) and resulted in a comfortable win for Staffordshire against a weaker Shropshre team 9½ - 6½, although not all of our players had a good day!

Thanks to all players and a reminder that the next match is against Worcesterhire, also at Brewood, on 29th October.
